This beginner friendly, 2-3 hour workshop will teach you all of the basics of mycelium cultivation. From preparing liquid cultures to dealing with substrate, proper moulding, casting and lastly finishing.

Workshop Activities
Educational Talk
We'll explore embodied carbon and the hidden costs of conventional building materials as well as learn how fungi can transform discarded waste into a versatile bio-material that sequesters CO2 rather than releasing it.
Substrate Preparation
Prepare a custom growth medium blend, out of locally collected, discarded waste materials. Understand the colonization, timeline and process from inoculation to full substrate coverage.
Lab Introduction
Participants will be taught fundamental, basic sterile technique and inoculation methods that take place in a lab setting to successfully grow and cultivate mycelium liquid cultures needed to kick start the process.
Moulding & Casting
Learn to shape this living material by growing mycelium into custom shapes and forms. Participants will prepare moulds, inoculate substrate with mushroom spawn, and cast the mixture into shapes.
Finishing
Channel your inner painter! In this creative session, explore surface treatment techniques to protect, beautify, and extend the shelf life of your mycelium piece. Customize your dried mycelium pieces with selected colours.
